Having read for a degree in Electronic Engineering, Dave has always kept abreast of technology trends. In 2010, he patented and launched an e-commerce postal concept, venturing on a journey of discovery while relocating his family to Cape Town to be closer to extended family. During this time he extended his knowledge by doing a certificate in digital marketing through the University of Stellenbosch while also working as a Principal Consultant for PSP-Icon consulting house where Dave still occasionally consults as an associate, focusing on operations optimisation and systems implementations.
Dave is equally adept in implementing technology as he is in engaging people around a purpose.
Dave’s defining strength is his people-centred leadership. His ability to build strong relationships both at senior levels and lower levels on the shop floor enables gives him the necessary credibility to get by-in to his plans and drive performance.
His key strengths are team leadership, team alignment and driving continuous improvement.
Nhlanhla Sithole – HR Director Southern Africa Unilever
In 2012, Dave accepted a role in Mars as the Supply Chain Director for Food – looking after end to end supply chain. This provided an opportunity to gain valuable skills in logistics optimisation; building a cost to serve model and implementing a TMS (Transport Management System). He also worked to deliver improvement in operations which led to the factory receiving the SA Productivity award for the Western Cape in 2013 and a Mars “Make the Difference Award” for South Africa for improvements in Customer Service. Dave worked on a major restructuring project for the wider Mars South Africa business, leading the Supply Chain work stream. The supply chains merged to encompass all categories for Mars South Africa – including Pet, Chocolate, Food and Gum. The new Head of Supply Chain role was based in Johannesburg and Dave commuted in this role on a regular basis from Cape Town.
After four very enjoyable years with Mars, with great international training and exposure, Dave accepted a Cape Town based role with Freddy Hirsch as GM – Operations, opening opportunities to explore new territory of retail – with 14 retail stores reporting into his role and the chance to run end to end supply chain for a much larger South African organisation with reach into Africa. Dave had an impact in driving logisitics savings, developing governance and performance systems and implementing a TMS for the owner driver network. In a “sprint project” together with Coxswain, together with his team, he was able to push capacity in the plant to new record levels.
David is an experienced, effective, values driven leader.
David ensured the analysis and advice were implemented swiftly and effectively. What most impressed me was his rapport with his team, he sets expectations, is firm but fair and ‘works in’ with his team. Working together, under David’s leadership the facility set new production records.
It was a highly effective consulting combination of consultant and leader implementing and managing to maximise effect and value.

He is married to Alison, a qualified Occupational Therapist with her own practice in medico-legal assessments, broadening over time into the insurance industry and related assessments. She completed her Workwell qualification and has since focused on performing Functional Capacity Evaluations and Work Site Visits for insurance purposes and has more recently been involved in the Return-to-Work process and Case Management.
